The reason voltage optimisation can have such a significant effect on energy consumption lies in the fact that generally speaking the grid supplies a higher voltage than required and although the nominal voltage in the UK is 230V, the average is actually 242V. As the vast majority of equipment in a UK building will have been designed to operate at the European voltage of 220V this “over-voltage” means that energy consumption will be higher.
